Mountainside

Mountainside has no sidewalks, and its streets are hilly. The houses are set back from the road, and you get a feeling of isolation. The shops, library, school, park and recreation center are clustered in “the village” at the base of the hill, several miles from most of the houses. Children spend most of their free time close to home because its not easy to get around in this neighborhood-the hills are too steep for bicycles. They play baseball and soccer in diamonds thy have painted on the streets. They build tree houses and rope wings and share them with other neighborhood children. The children interact with few adults other than their parents, and that doesn’t’ seem to bother them. They have to rely on their parents to drive them to lessons or recreational facilities.

Rosewood

Rosewood is a neighborhood with sidewalks and connecting streets on which the children ride their bicycles and play softball. There are few boundaries between the houses. The neighborhood is centered on the school. Anyone can get there within a 7-minute walk and many children use the playground as a meeting place.

Bancroft

Bancroft is a neighborhood with no sidewalks or street lamps. The roads are narrow and patched with asphalt. Most houses cannot be seen from the street. Yards are separated by fences. In Bancroft, both parents are apt to work, and children are frequently left on their won when not in school; children’s time is often spent in the company of brothers and sisters. Children rarely leave their block except to go to school, run an errand or keep an appointment. This may be because the school and park both front on streets of heavy traffic.

Glenn

Glenn begins where the trucking companies and shipping warehouses along a freeway exit end. The houses look like fortresses. There are a lot of apartments. Neighbors sit on banisters, and children hang around the streets. Although buses and large trucks run through continually, there are no stop signs. Shops and churches are located mostly in one area; all have locked gates because vandalism rates are high. There is a park with a recreation center that many people frequent. Glenn is a neighborhood with strong ties based on cultural heritage. Friendships seem to be formed along cultural lines, and tightly knit adolescent gangs are common.

Looking at above communities, using the functions and structure of communities compare and contrast each one. Make sure you use specific examples.
