Policy and Organizational Behavior

Executive Summary

Patient Safety Compliance

My organization comply with the regulatory requirement of patient safety. The compliance involves adhering to various financial and regulatory requirements as well as the confirmation of various documentations relating to patient safety. The main areas being disclosure and error reporting, lowering costs and improving outcomes through clinical analytics, applying evidence-based practices, culture, and adoption. Compared with others, the organization aligns with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) patient safety standards by having an evidence-based system to promote healthcare affordability and quality through the management, collection, and analysis of patient safety activities. In addition, the organization comply with the following patient safety practices.

  • Using pressure-relieving bedding in order to prevent development of pressure ulcers in patients.
  • Using perioperative β-blockers in right patients in order to deter perioperative mortality and morbidity.
  • Suitable application of antibiotic prophylaxis in a dental and surgical procedure to inhibit postoperative bacterial infections.
  • Using maximum sterile barriers when placing a central line in order to deter infections.

Financial Implications

The financial implication to meet the patient safety compliance would involve innovation of infrastructures, which is the initial step towards optimizing quality care and reducing mortality and morbidity rates. Direct costs arise because the organization has to pay overtime to healthcare providers or hiring external services. Also, the organization has to factor in replacement costs that emanate from recruitment fees, work-start monitoring, credentialing and hiring processes, and orientation. Rescheduling of patient appointments, treatments and procedures, and transfers all take a financial toll. Additionally, finances are required for the reorganization of the systems including electronic data management and filing systems as well as adopting new and advanced heath technologies (Vincent, Burnett, & Carthey, 2013).

Importance of The Measure

Patient safety is a regulatory requirement that seeks to enhance maximum safety of patients. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) dictates the required standards on patient safety. Patient safety is therefore not just important to the patient but also to the organization regarding minimizing their financial expenses on injuries and accidents (Agnew, Flin, & Mearns, 2013).

Changes to Improve Compliance

Some of the changes aimed at steering compliance for patient safety include upgrading the hospital facilities. The hospital should monitor and control the areas where the patients sleep to minimize chances of spreading infections, alleviating slippery floors, keeping proper records and training the healthcare practitioners. The change will promote professionalism and reduce errors, accidents, injuries, and infections during care delivery.

People Affected by The Changes

There are various stakeholders that will be affected by this change. One of the group is the healthcare providers including the nurses, pharmacists, physicians, dentists, clinical officers, and surgical technologists. They will be affected because they must adhere with the implemented changes and they will accountable for their negligence and activities. They are also the change agents since they have direct contact with the patients. Secondly, the patients will be affected because they have to comply with the changes such as restricted movements. Another group to be affected by the change is the hospital administrators because they will take part in the surveillance and coordination of the change plan (Shekelle et al., 2013)

Plan to Implement the Changes

The organization plan to instigate the change is strategic and targets the support of various stakes for its success. The first step is to win the support of the health care practitioners as well the patients and ensure they embrace the proposed changes. The next thing is to implement the change plan in phases, beginning with the adoption of new electronic information systems then upgrading the facilities such as the buildings later.

Obstacles

Some obstacles we would expect to find include rejection of some policies, both by patients and practitioners. If for instance patients are restricted from some freedom for their safety, they may react repulsively to the change plan. Another obstacle is that implementing full patient safety requirements would be a costly affair. Therefore, financial constraints will also limit most of the change plans.

Strategies for Overcoming Obstacles

Dealing with the above barriers would require prior communication of the intended changes and ensure that each change receives approval of all stakeholders before it is implemented. Since organizational changes are inevitable, leaders should help care providers and other relevant stakeholders build and structure effective teams by creating a shared vision and setting new organizational structures that focuses on authentic and improved care. Establishing a clear vision regarding the change process is an important element for promoting successful change. The sourcing of the funds should also extend beyond the boundaries of the hospital environment and should incorporate the government, NGOs, and other prominent healthcare organizations.
