Our world is currently facing a massive threat of terrorism. Groups around the world target innocent people to attain their illicit goals. The United States is on the helm of affairs related to combating terrorism. This role has led the country on the frontline of the war against terrorism, which, in return, has put millions of US lives at stake (McEntire, 2018). People are not as safe as they used to be two decades ago. The event of 9/11 has changed the whole security dynamic of the country. DHS (Department of Homeland Security) has a stated mission to prevent terrorism and enhance security. It is the responsibility of this department to secure the borders and take all measures necessary to prevent any attack on the US soil. Millions of lives are at stake, and DHS has an enormous responsibility, knowing that many terrorist groups around the world want to target mainland US.
Simulation Case 1 paper can be extended by enhancing the mission area of preventing terrorism and enhancing the security of the DHS. This mission of DHS has the responsibility of taking all necessary measures to secure the country. Simulation case paper has presented a wide array of measures that can be taken to enhance security and prevent terrorism. DHS should take all measures and employ every resource available to complete its mission. In days of contemporary technology, it is the responsibility of DHS to employ community members to increase surveillance (Landrum & Kan, 2017). Surveillance is critical to prevent terrorism and enhance security. For example, if an active shooter is roaming on the streets, who are carrying automatic weapons lethal enough to take dozens of lives, DHS must combat him or her and save precious lives. How will the DHS combat this person?
DHS can only combat this attacker and shooter if it has resources on the ground. Simulation case paper states that different agencies have employed multiple resources on the ground. They also have enabled community members to as first responders in case of any activity. DHS can enhance its mission of preventing terrorism and enhancing security by employing resources and first responders on the ground. Community members should be involved who can tackle such incidents before security forces arrive. It is paramount for DHS to expand its mission and include other resources in it. Only then would it be possible to safeguard multiple populated areas at one time.
Community induction in DHS’s mission of preventing terrorism and enhancing security is paramount (Harrison, 2018). A responsible community is the eyes and ears of the government. They not only can prevent such attacks from happening but can halt their progress in the beginning. A responsible community monitors activity is going around in their area. They keep a close eye on such activities that are unusual and can be a cause of concern. If a community member notices any activity going on, an active shooter roaming around, he or she can immediately report it to the authorities before this shooter starts taking lives. So much so, if this shooter starts living nearby, responsible community members can take notice of his or her activities, and if they found anything dubious, they can report it to the authorities. This is how the community can be included in the DHS’s mission of preventing terrorism and enhancing security. This will equip DHS further in surveillance of the country.
