Get Help Now!There is a growing need for nurses and other health professionals in primary and secondary care to develop and advance their skills for medications management and related therapeutics. In nursing, for example, there has been much debate around the efficacy of pre-registration education to equip students with the knowledge or confidence for their future responsibilities for drug administration and the use of drugs within care settings (Meechan et al. 2011). Furthermore, the institution of dependent prescribing has increased the imperative for nurses and other health professionals to maintain a sound knowledge base in contemporary pharmacology and therapeutics, to contribute effectively to diagnostic reasoning and decision-making in a multidisciplinary environment.
Increased public awareness of, and demand for, alternative and complementary therapies, alongside compelling arguments for social and psychological models of healthcare, also require that health professionals reflect critically on other approaches to care.
This module aims to provide students with the background knowledge and practical understanding of concepts associated with diagnostic reasoning and subsequent therapeutic intervention for medications management in healthcare practice environments.
Learning objectives
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
identify and appraise the practical, legal, ethical and administrative factors related to drug administration and the use of drugs in healthcare contexts
explore and discuss critically processes of diagnostic reasoning and pharmacokinetics relevant to a range of medications used in healthcare contexts
analyse critically how therapeutic interventions impact on patient care through exploration of a range of common health problems
identify and appraise alternative approaches and perspectives for healthcare delivery.
Assessment
CW1 Summative Assessment
Students will be required to complete a 4,000-word essay which will include a 500-word case study. The case study must centre on a patient who each student has been involved in the care of within their area of practice. The patient should be selected based on the student’s role in diagnostic reasoning, medications management and subsequent therapeutic interventions for that patient. The case study must not exceed 500 words in length. However, figures, tables and boxes can be used and will not be included in the word count. The case study should be presented at the beginning of the essay.
The remainder of the essay must comprise a thorough and evidence-based appraisal of the student’s selected patient’s case and the wider clinical context, following the detailed guidance provided. The detailed guidance will include a suggested template for the title of the essay (which will differ for each student according to the patient/clinical context), as well as a proposed structure for the essay (refer to the Assessment Brief for details).
Formative Assessment
A draft plan of the case study and its proposed application for the remainder of CW1 should be submitted via Turnitin for formative assessment on the date specified (refer to the Assessment Brief for details).
In-unit activity
Throughout the module, you will have the opportunity to work in small online groups of approximately five to six students, independently and also as part of whole group discussions. The units’ learning activities are designed to consolidate your learning and to foster a deeper understanding for application in practice. The activities can be tailored to each student’s individual professional circumstances through the development of a case study based around a patient from the student’s practice setting. The case study will also form the basis for the assessment.
There are collaborative pieces of work based on the application of patient group directives and other aspects of medications management. All students are actively encouraged to contribute and also to consider what other colleagues have posted. Experience has shown that the benefits of participation far outweigh the time taken to contribute. Often, your fellow students may make suggestions that will help you and others on the course, and sharing knowledge widens everyone’s access to information sources. The online tutor will monitor this for participation and the content of the postings.
